Why I Travel: Diary of Reflections from the Life of the Road

This is a unique post because I usually spend our weekly time together hammering away at a concept I know will make the biggest difference in your life.

This week, I decided we’ll change things up a bit and talk about some of the lessons I gleaned about life, love, business and relationships while travelling and living on the road.

Stop #1 – St Petersburg: Home Revisited

I went back home first to reconnect with my family, and even had time to do a 2-day workshop, sharing ideas with fellow Russians committed to living their best lives.

Going back to my roots was an interesting journey. I had the chance to walk down the paths I used to skip down as a school-girl and to go to places that formed so much of my early childhood memories.

I didn’t come from a wealthy family and the odds of me making it out of Russia and creating a life I truly loved were exceedingly low. But somehow I did.

It’s funny how life turns out when you set your spirit free and commit to following it 100%. My spirit has taken me around the world, through tough and painful times to present day where I am on purpose and in joy every day.

That said, Russia is NOT the same place it was when I left. The place vibrates with a new pulse now — people want to live life to the fullest. The old closed-mindedness is gone — people want to seek new knowledge, and words like aspiration, goals and dreams are commonplace. It’s like a brand-new place, alive and hungry.

My 2 biggest lessons on departure:

  • Follow your spirit for it will take you on a journey to discovering and living your best life. It might not always be easy, but it’s worth it.
  • Things change. We need to move with the times and stay up-to-date. That said, opportunities EXIST because of change so we need to be on the look-out and embrace change.

Stop #2 – Paris: A Time To Live

Paris was interesting because I am a fast-paced, all-action type of person… but Paris moves at its own pace. I had to learn how to slow down, how to not talk at 100 miles per hour, how to not sprint-walk from point to point and hurry hurry hurry to get things down.

As I finally took deep breaths and learnt to move slower, I had time to reflect and simply BE in the moment. Funny enough, I greatly enjoyed it!

Lesson learnt: Yes, it’s important to achieve and strive. But there’s great joy too in just BEING and enjoying the present moment. Life should not be lived rushing from point A to point B in a hurry. I left Paris leaving behind my craziness, stress and neurotic energy. I felt like a woman reborn!

Stop #3 – Switzerland: Breathe, Yana, Breathe

Switzerland wasn’t easy for me, even though I was surrounded by vast beauty and just amazing nature. Switzerland is the place to go if you LOVE nature and want to be wowed, amazed and just spellbound by Mother Nature’s wonders.

I mean whatever you want — greens, mountains, snow, clear water, fresh air — ANYTHING you can ever dream of … Switzerland has in abundance! That said, I had to really force myself to relax in Switzerland. My climb up Kilimanjaro was not long away, and I had the butterflies in the stomach feeling.

Also, I wasn’t entirely used (yet) to the vast space, freedom, aloneness that surrounded me. It took me a while to find my groove, and when I did, it felt AMAZING! I felt so connected to nature, and experienced clarity of purpose and rejuvenation of my spirit like nothing I’ve experienced in a long, long time.

Lesson learnt: I learnt to let go and let my spirit guide me, instead of wanting to force and control everything all the time. I learnt to FLOW with the universe, and let it be my compass. It took me a while, but in the end, I left feeling MAGICAL.

That’s all for Part 1 of my life on the road.

I found myself letting go of anxiety, reaching deep into myself and re-connecting with my true purpose and emerging clearer than ever before. I never expected such a magical, transformational experience. I hope the lessons I shared inspire you to find your OWN clarity and space and help you reconnect with your spirit.

My biggest lesson of all: Let go, and let your spirit guide you. Stop trying to control everything but FLOW with nature and the universe. Relax and dance.
