Herstory: Arundhati Roy, A True Literary Activist

Today’s post is going to be a little different than the usual. Every week I share tips, mindsets and techniques on how you can lead a more connected life. This week, however, I’ll go big-picture and talk about opportunities, the future and the untapped power we all have here in Asia (and why we need to reclaim it!)

I’ve lived all over the world, from Russia to The States to Switzerland and now Singapore, and I can see, as a regular traveller, that the future is here in Asia. Yet, the biggest problem I see is that most people in Asia have yet to awaken to the power and opportunity they have. They are looking to the West for ideas and answers, for opportunity and benchmarks for success – when the future, the opportunities and the answers are RIGHT HERE in Asia.

How Do You Succeed In Asia?

Well, look at all the Asian entrepreneurs and successful people who have done it! There’s a model we can all learn from.

My point is that we are ENOUGH – and we need to realize that. We don’t have to constantly look out for indicators of success or validations of approval. Instead, we need to stand tall and be proud of what we as a culture, as a continent have in terms of power, collective wisdom, knowledge and experience and use that to succeed in the coming future.

This is why I created YanaTV and why I positioned it to allow leaders of industry here in Asia and other emerging markets to share their voice and wisdom. But my bigger picture goal is to empower people here in Asia and other emerging markets to step up, embrace the gifts they already have and give themselves permission to succeed.

You CAN succeed and you have everything you need to do so! Not to mention opportunities, education and attention are migrating right here to your door-step. This is where I find purpose and great excitement.

The future is right here, and if we embrace it AND accept ourselves – we can do amazing things.

So What Can You Do Now?

Here are 5 simple steps you can put in place immediately to give yourself the permission to succeed:

  1. Ask yourself what your EXISTING talents are - and ask how you can share these with the rest of the world?
Quit benchmarking yourself against what some “expert” out there is doing. Ask how you can contribute to the world and how you can do it YOUR way.
  1. Ask yourself what you stand for and who you want to help?
Get clear on who you are and what your values are. There is no power in being a replica of what someone else is doing.
  1. Ask yourself how you can use your existing cultural experiences and background as ingredients for success?
Not everyone has to go to MIT or Harvard and get a degree to have the “qualifications” to succeed. You have gone through a lot and experienced plenty - and guess what, there are people out there who can connect. You can help those people!
  1. Investigate what makes you unique HERE in Asia!
What makes you stand out from the crowd here in the local/regional market where you are at right now? What’s your unique angle and your message? The sharper you craft it, the clearer it is, the easier it will be for you to penetrate the noise of the marketplace and get seen and heard.
  1. Ask what you are truly PROUD of!
We all have areas in our life that are works in progress, but there are clearly things going on in your life right now that you are proud of! Those things are clues for where your better future lie. Explore those and OWN those.

These 5 questions will set you on the right course to achieving incredible success right here in Asia and other emerging markets.

Remember, you don’t have to do it someone else’s way to make it.

Find your voice, set it free - and achieve success on YOUR OWN TERMS.

You can do it!
