5 Steps Towards Finding Your True Purpose In Life And Business

One question that keeps coming up over and over again during all my workshops is What is my Purpose? We are all looking for that answer; the answer that gives our life purpose and meaning. The answer that gives our business a bigger picture and more clarity around an existential Why? question.

I am a strong believer that only those people who are clear about their life purpose are truly happy, and only those businesses who know their bigger WHY are truly successful. Follow these five steps and I guarantee you’ll move leaps and bounds towards finding your true purpose in life and business.

1. Create Or Find A Conducive Environment Without Distractions

It is important to eliminate all distractions from your surroundings. A quiet environment enables you to focus your mind for the important tasks ahead. Sit calmly and take a few breaths in and out. If you meditate, you can take five minutes for a short meditation.

2. Identify And Write Down What You Love And What You Hate

Both love and hate are very strong emotions and can be used as an inner compass towards areas that we are really passionate about: areas where you want to take a stand, areas where you want to contribute, because it touches you so deeply on a personal level that you just cannot be a bystander.

For example, I love travelling, living life on the edge, and guiding people towards their full potential. I hate it when people settle for a lesser self out of fear, choose a mediocre life and trap themselves in poverty.

3. Identify And Write Down Your Values And Role Models

What are your values? Who are your role models? Who do you consider to be your heroes? Who/what inspires you? What do you enjoy doing? Write them down. Write down as many details as possible. Note down what comes to mind without over-thinking it and keep going as long as the process feels intriguing and natural.

For example, my role models are Oprah, Marie Forleo, Dalai Lama, Steve Jobs, Nelson Mandela, and Princess Diana. I studied their life stories, their mindsets, and their values. It helped be greatly in my own search towards purpose.

4. Create Your Personal Mission Statement With Your Findings

Follow these steps to come up with your personal mission statement:

a) What do you want to do?

Consider this: if you lived a perfect life, what would you do with your life? What would be your preferred career choice? What causes would you be interested in? What do you enjoy doing? What are your hobbies? Put it all down.

For example, I have always wanted to teach people how to break through social conditioning and self-imposed limitations to become happy, fulfilled, and brave enough to follow their true passion.

b) Who do you want to help?

This step will help you to find out a bigger WHY for your business. What do you want to be your life’s work? Why? How are you willing to contribute to the world? Who are you willing to serve? What do you want your legacy to be?

For example, my personal mission is to inspire and educate as many people as I possibly can about their inner power, full potential and quantum leaps. My work is based deeply on serving others. I would like to contribute as much as I can to creating a world that works for everyone. At the end of my life, I would like to look back and see that I inspired millions to rise above their fears, limitations and conditioning; to follow their dreams and passions, and to consciously create a life that they truly want and a business that empowers others.

c) What’s the result? What value will I create?

Doing what you do to the people you want to help, what would you want to impact? What would success look like? What value would you create?

Analyse what you have written down in all the steps above. Use that information to come up with your personal mission statement for your life. The mission statement will give you a hint or a full view of what your life purpose is and the bigger WHY for your business.

5. Trust Your Gut

The final step is look for the moments during this entire process where you felt calm, at peace and at one with the world. That feeling is usually a clear indication that you’re onto something. After all, intellect helps you get through life and enjoy a decent existence in society, but, honestly, have you made all important decisions in your life with your heart or gut?

At this stage, I want you to stop reading and start on this process right now. Like, seriously. Do the process and follow each step. The reward is truly worth it: a happy life with a purpose and a successful business with a bigger WHY.
