4 Steps To Power Up Your Qi: What Is Qi And Why Is It Vital For Your Health?

When qi flows through us, unblocked, we are at the peak of our creativity and productivity. Our vitality is strong, and we are in full enjoyment of our power.

What is Qi?

This word, meaning “life force”, translates from Chinese as “breath”, “air”, or “gas”. It’s actually a rather versatile and universal word, with historical, cultural and linguistic roots going back almost two thousand years. Here’s a glimpse at how energy is known in some cultures and languages:

  •          Qi – Chinese
  •          Khi – Vietnamese
  •          Ki – Japanese
  •          Prana – Hinduism
  •          Life force – Sanskrit
  •          Chi – Igbo religion
  •          Pneuma – Ancient Greece
  •          Mana – Hawaii
  •          rLung – Tibetan Buddhism
  •          Ruah – Hebrew culture
  •          Vital energy – Western philosophy
  •          Energy – used by practitioners of spirituality and alternative medicine

The Chinese word qi, actually has the following more specific meanings, amongst many more:

  •          Air, gas
  •          Spirit, vigor, morale
  •          Vital/material energy (in Chinese metaphysics)
  •          Breath, respiration

Where Is This Qi?

Within our bodies, qi is described by the Chinese as flowing through meridian points and along meridian lines, whereas prana is understood by yogis to flow through chakras. Ideally, qi is free to stream through meridian lines.

When Qi Gets Blocked

When there is a disruption, stagnancy, depletion or blockage along the energy lines, qi is weakened. This is where illness and/or dis-ease can start.

We even express this feeling as “I feel blocked,”, “I’m stuck,”, “I’m lost,”, or  spaced out, deadlocked, in a fog, screwed up. Usually, these blocks are manifested as physical, emotional, spiritual or mental weaknesses, with one of them popping up first, and the others following behind, sooner or later. How soon or late depends on your natural state of vitality and how quickly you address the block, in which case there is less of an internal tsunami.

What To Do If Your Qi Is Blocked

What can we do, then, if we feel a depletion in our energy? This is when it’s time to do a check through various aspects of your life:

  •          What, in your diet, might be depleting your vital life force?
  •          What, in your exercise routine, needs to be cut out or added?
  •          What, in your body care, might be causing a toxic reaction to your energy points?
  •          What, in your head space (stuff related to work, family, responsibilities, etc.) needs to be addressed?
  •          What, in your personal life, is an attack on your emotions?
  •          What, in your spiritual practice, is lacking and causing emptiness?
  •          What, at work, is burning you out?

Here Is What You Can Do To Power Your Qi Up

Extremely vital people – the sort who just have abundant qi – have succeeded in these few steps: Be Aware – Unblock ASAP – Recharge – Stay tuned

1. Be aware of when qi is blocked as well as where the blocked qi is

2. Unblock.

  1. Until you know how to self-unblock or if it’s just a bit too stuck, there are many practitioners from across the different disciplines, who can help unblock qi. For example, a TCM practitioner can perform acupuncture and a reiki practitioner as a facilitator for passing on universal life force energy.
  2. Unblock ASAP. Address the block when there’s just one or a few, not when qi has become so stagnant that you can’t move, think or express oneself.

3. Recharge. Once the unblocking has been done, there will already be a flow, but you need to make sure of two things:

  1. keep recharging it until it’s back in full flow
  2. replace the depleting habit with a strengthening one (don’t go back to the old ways)

4. Stay tuned to the state of your being (body, mind, spirit) so that you are living with awareness, which brings us back to no 1.

Sometimes, a qi blockage can be particularly intense, and you many need to consult a number of different practitioners, until you find the one that resonates with you. Even then, it may take several sessions.

This is particularly the case in cases of emotional, spiritual, and ancestral energy blocks. After intense block removals, you will need time to adjust to the new state of being, as it will initially feel as a void, which needs time to heal, seal, and strengthen.

Powering up your qi is in parallel to your diet, exercise, and body care. It’s a great barometer of how to ascertain the state of your well-being, happiness and health.

Here is an additional question to help you Power Up:

When do you feel your energy flows most freely? Is there a place where you feel unrestrained and ideas just flow out of you, and you have high energy levels? Remember these emotional and physical spaces and use them as a way of powering up.
