The Creation Of The Eco-Friendly Sea Shanty Villa In Bali

My husband and I share a passion for nature and outdoor adventure. We have been travelling around and living in Asia for 20 years. Now with three young children, we thrive on sharing this passion through our travel experiences with them. We believe their best education is gained through real-life experiences.

We believe that our goal to be the best parents we can be will be achieved by embracing adventure and encouraging a passion for life. Our children will gain by learning through people, different cultures, and an appreciation for our fragile planet.

We have been travelling to Bali regularly for 20 years. Once our children came along, our priorities with regards to our accommodation choices changed. Suddenly, two rooms at a hotel became a costly holiday, especially when they couldn’t guarantee interconnecting rooms. We broadened our search to villas, however, we struggled to find ones that genuinely catered for children, and embraced nature and the outdoors through sustainable practices.

There were so many villas in Bali promising to be family-friendly and eco-friendly, but falling well short. Pools were not safe; pool fences were non-existent or difficult to get installed and rooms were separated by gardens (presenting security and safety issues). Floors were slippery for little wet feet, and generally there was very little garden (if any) for the kids to run around in. The use of air con was strongly encouraged, doors were kept closed, and plastic bathroom amenities and water bottles were the norm. Recycling was non-existent. And, worst of all, the service was often unhelpful and impersonal. There is no way we would have left our children with the villa staff.

So when we found some land on which to build our perfect family villa, in Jimbaran - our favourite part of Bali - all our dreams came true. Thanks to a terrific builder who understood exactly what we wanted (with three children of his own and a similar passion for outdoor living), and the clear design vision we had in mind, we were able to create our ideal sanctuary incorporating all the elements of family, nature and the outdoors that we love, with wonderful staff who have become part of our family.

We realised, once the villa was complete, that we had not only created a holiday destination villa that tells a story of us, our passions and our values but also one that we are proud to share with all our friends and family and many other travellers who share the same sentiments.

Book your next holiday through  The Sea Shanty Villa.
We will be delighted to host you in our little piece of paradise.

I am an Australian mother of 3 children. Prior to moving to Singapore (where I have been since 2008), I spent 10 years in Sydney working in travel, mostly in the luxury travel business. The move to Singapore for personal reasons saw me move into a Regional APAC Meetings & Events role and after some time out to have children, a move to Microsoft as Travel Manager for APAC. Once we finished building the villa in Bali, I made the decision to stop full time work to spend more time with my children and to focus on growing "The Sea Shanty Villa" business. This brings me great joy as it allows me the flexibility to achieve the right balance between family priorities and running a business from home. Plus the regular trips to Bali make it all worthwhile too! We designed the villa for us to use as a second family home, so that also makes it a very easy sell to all our like-minded friends living the expat life in Asia.
