Dream Careers: How To Be Yourself And Follow Your Passion

Unless you are a recent graduate, we all have certain work and social experiences, yet some of us still face the pressure of a career bottleneck, or imbalance between career and family.

For those who feel the need to reposition themselves in the workplace, why not take this great chance to be yourself and follow your passion?

My Story

I wasn’t a bag designer before I came to Singapore. I was a costume designer and I spent more than 4 years designing clothes for dogs. That was an even tougher job than designing clothes for people! However, I quit after we moved to Singapore, as there is no market for such business in a country near the equator, with temperatures of over 30 degrees all year round.

I was a housewife for a while. I’m not the kind of person who can enjoy housework and the daily routine of taking care of the family. I love my family, but I still felt lost being home the whole day long. The first year was really desperate and most of my desperation came from the anxiety of not knowing how to reposition myself.

I believe other expats have similar situations, and my opinion is: you should reset your life goal and find the career path that you’re passionate about as soon as possible. What in your heart, do you really love and enjoy?

How do you decide what to do as a career?

Be honest with yourself about who you really are, exactly what you LOVE to do and what you CAN do. The ideal career is to combine what you can do and what you love to do, and although it may sound rather idealistic, you can always try it out and learn as you go along!

That’s exactly how I became a handbag designer. I’m a bag lover, and I have years of designing experience, so I combined what I’m good at with what I love. I’m sure you can also find your dream career. You may find your way immediately, or it may take you some time to figure it out, but you will know when you are heading in the right direction – just be yourself and follow your passion!
