Chinese New Year is also known as the Spring Festival, and it’s an auspicious time to bring flowers and plants into your living and work spaces, to attract good luck & prosperity for the year ahead.

Chinese New Year is one of the most elaborate and colourful times in the calendar year, and a time when the wholesalers, florists, and China Town are buzzing with activity. Red and gold are of course the most auspicious and prominent colours, the red symbolizing happiness and the gold, wealth.

Flowers, blooms, and plants play a significant role welcoming guests, diners, and visitors in restaurants, hotels, and homes during this period as they represent rebirth and growth. It’s common to see vases filled with ‘Kai Yun Zhi’ or Lucky Bamboo with red ribbon tied around them representing the five elements: Earth, Metal, Wood, Fire & Water, and it’s said they balance the flow of ‘chi’ (energy) as well as being a symbol of longevity.

Below Is A Breakdown Of Five Of The Most Popular Flowers And Plants, And Why They’re Good To Have Around:

1. Kumquat Trees come in plant form and are very popular. They represent abundance and happiness. They’re slow-growing evergreen shrubs which bear small fruits resembling oranges. Make sure to water regularly. The orange is auspicious because it phonetically sounds like ‘GOLD’ and symbolizes good luck and prosperity. The oranges themselves are often given as gifts to friends at this time of year as a gesture of good tidings.

2. Peach Blossoms are bright pink flowers that symbolize two traits for a successful life: Endurance & courage.

3. Pussy Willow signifies growth & prosperity. Place a nice bunch in a vase of fresh water, and watch them grow. In addition, it is customary and can be fun to adorn the branches with ‘good luck’ & ‘prosperity’ symbols such as ingots, coins, and jewels; and if you’re lucky and the timing is right, these buds will blossom by Lap Chun – the Day Of Spring.

4. Phalaenopsis Orchids symbolize vitality and longevity. At this time of year you’ll find pots of brightly-coloured Phalaenopsis in abundance. Their petals resemble the wings of a butterfly, and whether you’re superstitious or not, they make beautiful gifts. Phalaenopsis orchids are sure to make any host feel happy, just by their sheer beauty and elegance.

5. Chrysanthemums, which are long-lasting and durable, are a very auspicious flower and a traditional favourite during the New Year. Combined with other symbols of longevity such as pine or bamboo, they will attract good luck to any interior.

Do you go through times when you feel stuck, unmotivated and underwhelmed? That’s okay, many people do.

The root of getting stuck can often be traced to the clutter that has built up in and around our lives, whether that be mental, physical or both.

When a plant grows it needs space and we do, too. So get rid of the stale soil which is the clutter and renew your pot by bringing nature into your life.

Making a conscious effort to de-clutter and work towards a clean and uncluttered work environment helps us to break free and grow. It gives us new energy and a sense of relief. That, in turn, brings us freedom and new motivation.

De-cluttering is just one step to re-energizing your office space, the next is something so simple, you’ll wonder why everyone isn’t doing it.

The Magic

That magical step is to add plants and flowers to your environment. By replacing clutter with something positive that’s alive, energizing, and green allows us to lift our mood, allows us to thrive and the benefits aren’t just aesthetic or homely.

Plants and flowers are universally known to help in reducing our levels of stress, increase our productivity and make for a better environment to work in.

Studies And Research

There have been numerous studies and research to prove these facts and they even attach numbers and percentages on those benefits, which include statistics like fewer days off, higher productivity and generally happier employees. So the main takeaway from all of these studies is that plants and flowers definitely have a positive impact on the people that work surrounded by them, as opposed to the people working in a lackluster, depressing or stale environment, often called ‘sick-building syndrome’.

You can’t put a price on the benefits of a healthy environment, but companies that are including plants and flowers into their spaces don’t need convincing as they’re seeing their results flourish and bloom in revenue and dollars.

One of the best examples of these benefits can be read in a well-cited scientific study of the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, in relation to the impact of plants and people. The study concluded that the main factor accounting for their high occupancy rate compared to other hotels was due to a significant investment in their ‘plant scaping’ and their use of plants as a significant design element in various parts of the hotel, which differentiated them from their competition. Consequently, a higher revenue from above-average room occupancy was found.

Bringing a bit of nature indoors really isn’t that hard and you don’t have to think as big as the Opryland Hotel to enjoy the benefits. Hotels, interior designers, stylists, and photographers all know the positive effect on perception and one thing for sure is the biggest benefits are health and cost.

You may be surprised to know that the cost of adding plants and flowers is often more economical than the other choices available for upgrading and renovating office décor. So why not give it a try and get started with a few plants.

Karen’s Top 5 Plant Suggestions For Re-energizing Your Office Space

Jade Plant, also known as Crassula ovata, is ideal for growing indoors. It grows like a miniature tree with a little trunk and branches, similar to a bonsai. It’s a succulent, so its leaves retain water, which is excellent news if you’re looking for a low-maintenance option.

Chinese Evergreen – Aglaonema with its attractive leathery leaves can tolerate low light and are known to remove toxins from the air.

Fittonia is cute and attractive with delicately veined leaves. They’re often referred to as a Mosaic plant. The benefit of Fittonias is that they can survive and thrive well under artificial light and they come in a variety of shades.

Peace Lily – Spathiphyllum, with its lush green foliage can survive in darker spaces and is quite low maintenance. The benefit of choosing this plant is that they have flowers, too. Keep them blooming with a little intervention from plant hormones readily available at any garden centre.

Phalaenopsis Orchids – although appearing delicate are actually very hardy and are always a hit as they come in a variety of colours and can stay in bloom for a few months. They look regal and elegant, show taste, and are good eye candy. A little maintenance will be required in the form of re-potting when they go out of bloom so they can grow new roots and leaves in preparation for the next stunning flower spikes.

If your passion were flowers, or something else not directly linked to business, how would you market yourself?

Karen French has become a social media expert while working to increase her engagement online. She’s invited to events to speak on the topic because not many floral designers make such great social presence!

Ten years ago, Karen fell in love with floral design and styling and has since travelled the globe learning from the world’s best. She’s had her designs worn by models and walked down runways, and set up in some of Singapore’s hottest spots. Not only has Karen been around the world, so has her expertise, as she’s been featured in traditional and online media in New York, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.

When asked about her favourite feature she said, “My favourites are the ones where I’m able to share and incorporate elements that appeal to at least two of the human senses. Visuals of beautiful floral arrangements always liven up a media piece together with educational or inspirational content.”

From Little-Known To Internationally Acknowledged

So, what does it feel like to grow a small business from little to internationally known? To have a vision, and build it in front of yourself to then have it cast in front of thousands of eyes? Karen remains humble saying, “It’s not so much about the hundreds or thousands of extra eyes and how I feel, but about the buzz when I find out I’ve made a difference. To find out I’ve inspired someone, whether it’s in the form of one of my designs giving someone creative inspiration or giving them the courage and confidence to follow their own passion.”

Karen doesn’t do her work for the numbers; she does it to move people and it’s evident in her work and effort. Her love and passion is about building floral design that takes your breath away, or livens up a space. One that adds a little more oomph, or a homey feeling you can relax into.

Secret Sauce To Karen’s Influence

Karen continues by generously sharing some of her tactics behind getting seen and talked about:

“Being active and visible are pretty crucial to being found in the first place. A good website, which is easy to navigate and easily viewed across devices is a must. I’d say the internet and the simplicity of being able to share has played a significant role in my own success and why others are sharing my story.

It’s not enough to be active and visible; you must also be credible. One of the biggest game changers for me was when I published my first flower book.

I’ve always made a big effort to embrace social media and have just started posting really short videos on Instagram. In the floral world, a picture can say a thousand words. I try to keep a balance between an online and an offline presence by attending networking events, getting involved in world-class floral events and holding floral demos and workshops. These activities peak a lot of interest from editors, writers, bloggers and the media who are often looking for interesting content and people to write about.”

Since she’s been making the most of social media and other publication formats, Karen has seen a significant increase in both her social media engagement and in the type of clients she’s attracting.

“I’m delighted because each day through our consistent messages, articles, the media and features we’re being rewarded with a new and better clientele. Those who appreciate quality, our creative style and, above all, value what we do. By attracting more of our target market we’re now able to work on really creative projects and, in turn, add value for our clients.”

A dream come true for entrepreneurs – to reach that place where you’re working with your ideal clients and adding value to their lives and businesses alike!

For The Entrepreneur Looking To Raise Their Influence

And if she had to give one tip to someone who’s looking to share a bit of the limelight, Karen would say with a smile, “Be prepared to give, to share, be flexible and efficient.”

If you’d like to have Karen at one of your events, invite her to speak, or spruce up your space (business or home), get in touch with her.

Looking for the best places in Singapore to take some stunning nature photos?

Yes, Singapore has a reputation for being an urban jungle with its high-rise buildings, glitzy shopping malls, Housing Development Board (HDB) flats and condominiums, but did you know it has more green spaces than any other city in South East Asia?

Having lived on the island since 1994 it’s encouraging to see an active conservation movement ensuring coastal areas, parks and gardens are kept safe for us to explore and will be preserved for future generations to enjoy.

Photography is great fun and as a floral designer, consultant and stylist I’m always looking for inspiring outdoor spaces with natural light to create infinite displays of my work for my books, articles, mood charts and blogs.

Outdoor shoots can be challenging, but that’s part of the excitement. The sheer unpredictability of nature and the weather means you’ll need to be able to think on your feet and be adaptable.

Taking time out to photograph your work enables you to build a useful photo bank. It’s also a great way to get a digital detox. All business owners can benefit from building their own photo banks and will be refreshed from spending time outdoors to find and visualize places they’d like to arrange a shoot.

Below are some stunning places in forests, parks and by the sea offering spectacular views that will take your breath away and spice up your own videos and shoots.

1. Punggol Waterway Park

This is just one of four parks linked by the North Eastern loop of park connectors with four different zones: Nature Cove, Recreation Zone, Heritage Zone and Green Gallery.

2. Singapore Zoological Gardens

Situated on Mandai Lake Road, the zoo has been named the world’s best rainforest zoo with wildlife and preservation of biodiversity at the top of its agenda.

Whilst this is a commercial entity, over the years I’ve never struggled to get some spectacular picture perfect, scenic photographs because this is such a unique zoo. Its location and environment offer many natural photo opportunities

East

3. Bedok Reservoir

This is home to water sports enthusiasts as well as 14,000 wetland plants as part of Singapore’s Active, Beautiful and Clean (ABC) Waters Programme. Plenty of photo opportunities here.

4. Changi East Boardwalk

This purpose built boardwalk hugs the coastline taking you on a route covering Creek Walk, Beach Walk, Sailing Point Walk, Cliff Walk, Kelong Walk and Sunset Walk. It is a great place to spot fishermen, sailing boats, the ocean and capture sunsets.

Central

5. Singapore Botanic Gardens

A world heritage site that is also a leading tropical botanical institute and a favourite of locals and residents right in the heart of the city.

Looking for a colonial bungalow to use as a backdrop, or a beautiful garden? Take a walk around the National Orchid Garden where you’ll discover Burkhill Hall, an Anglo-Malayan plantation style house that is located on the highest hill within the Botanic Gardens and laid out in colour zones. Useful if you require certain colours in your shoot.

6. Macritchie Reservoir

Described as a 12-hectare green haven it is frequented by bird watchers, people exercising, hiking and kayaking. Macritchie also serves as the home to an active group of macaques. It offers many wooded and waterside vistas and diverse scenery for perfect pictures.

7. East Coast Park

Located in the east on the southern coastline, this established beach park offers a treasured urban break from the city and a fun place for shutterbugs. Very popular with photographers if you require a beach or forest shoot.

8. Gardens By The Bay

This nature park spanning 101 hectares providing an abundance of settings for photo opportunities. If you find your walk amongst the super trees too hot, you can retreat to the cool-dry conservatory of the flower dome with its Mediterranean climate. There’s also the gigantic bio dome known as the Cloud Forest. Perfect for shots requiring a water fall!

West

9. Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve

Located in the north-west of the island, the reserve has many trails to explore including 202 hectares of mangroves and an abundance of mature trees. Depending on the style of your photoshoot, you might want to give this ecological jewel a try. But do watch out for the Crocs!

10.Bukit Chermin Boardwalk and Berlayer Creek

Previously inaccessible on foot, this newly created boardwalk hugs the shoreline of Keppel Harbor in the south-west of the island and provides a wonderful place for photos beside the ocean. It’s also linked to the Labrador Coastal Walk that connects the southern ridges of Labrador Nature Reserve and the southern waterfront with mud flats, mangroves and coastal forest. One of my favourite spots because for many years that area was completely secluded!

Attract good luck and prosperity by knowing which auspicious fruit and flowers to bring indoors this Chinese New Year.

1. The Mandarin orange, which phonetically sounds like ‘gold’ symbolizes good luck and prosperity. They’re often given as gifts to friends at this time of year as a gesture of good tidings.

2. Flowers, blooms and plants play a significant role in restaurants, hotels and private homes during this period as they represent rebirth and growth. It’s common to see ‘Kai Yun Zhi’ or Lucky Bamboo in abundance at the flower markets. Lucky Bamboo with a red ribbon tied around it represents the five elements: Earth, Metal, Wood, Fire and Water and is said to balance the flow of ‘chi’ (energy) as well as being a symbol of longevity.

3. The most prominent colours are, of course, red and gold. The red symbolizes happiness, and the gold, wealth.

As my Karen French Floral Designs page on Facebook gets closer to 30,000 fans and I’ve become more active on LinkedIn I’ve been exploring different ways to share my passion for flowers. I had the good fortune of meeting Christel Quek who was the lead Content for Twitter across Asia the Middle East and Africa and I was sold, so I started to Tweet. Better late than never right? I also joined the Slideshare community to share some valuable tips on Hospitality, Flowers & Your Brand. Through this amazing online world, I’m creating more and more awareness, attracting more followers and am able to spread my passion for flowers one stem at a time!

Yes, it takes time and you need to make time. But I’m compelled to share some insights because like it or hate it, the internet has changed the way business is done. There’s never been a better time to spread your wings and share your content with your networks.

Building Valuable Networks

But first you need to build those networks. I see people struggling for ‘likes’ on Facebook for their business pages and asking friends to ‘like’ them back. That’s a lazy numbers game and how many are actually really interested in what you do? What is more valuable is to have people who are genuinely interested in what you do so that you can build up a rapport, communicate and share. Building relationships will create more genuine followers and lead to more clients for your business.

Engaging Online
So how do you do that? Well with all of the social media available to all of us now the best way is to start connecting. Whether you’re an artist, a coach, a sportsman or a floral designer like myself, join groups and communities that attract like-minded people. Don’t just ‘like’ posts but comment and share interesting content.

Engaging Offline
The more interactive and engaged you are the higher the chances are of people really understanding what you do. I see people posting and then not acknowledging any of the comments. Think for a moment. What was the last thing you shared? Do you stand out? Are you different? Are you a member of any networking groups? Do you update content on your website, post on a regular basis or are your accounts rarely visited because you're too busy?

Networking offline is just as important as networking online. I see so many people fearing their competition, worried about them seeing and stealing their ideas. My answer to that is simple. If that's what you're worried about you're not differentiating yourself enough.

I don't worry that people will copy what I'm doing because a month from now I'll have moved on and be doing something different. Don't disconnect yourself from your community and become closed. Make the time to share what you know, help others and they will support you. Write articles for magazines, blog, network, and get yourself in front of a crowd.

The Proof Is In The Purchase

I recently published 'Entertain with Flowers and Flair'. Within days, it was purchased online via Amazon from flower lovers in Canada, UK and the U.S. People were writing to me to say they had seen my Author Website and had seen a press release on Broadway World Books World. I hadn't even seen them myself. Online content spreads fast. My publisher showcased the book at the Barcelona Book Fair and I did demos at my book signing in Singapore. Without social media, none of this would have been as big a success as it was and I've been able to get my messages out there at a very low cost compared to traditional methods.

This proves my point about sharing. The more you give, the more you get back. So make the time to connect, share and be passionate about what you do.

LinkedIn, Google, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and many other companies have given us the tools to share globally what we do and reach audiences that would have been very difficult to reach just 10 years ago. So take the leap, stop waiting for 'likes' and get proactive. The tools are at your fingertips and there's a whole world out there waiting to discover new things.

With flowery wishes

I once enjoyed a wonderful afternoon tea served by the impeccable waiters of a venue which describes itself as a hotel situated at the heart of the city’s premier shopping district, with world-class shopping at their doorstep and the grandeurs of a 5-star hotel within. An ideal residence for the discerning luxury traveler.

As I sat in the beautiful lobby, with its stunning artwork, beautiful decor and shiny marble floors I had time to observe the comings and goings. As luck would have it, I also got to observe the flowers being changed in the lobby.

I say ‘luck’ because ‘Hospitality, Flowers & Brands‘ is the title of my book and my observations reinforced a lot of the content I’ve written about.

I’m not sure about you, but my expectations of 5-star conjure up luxury, elegance and style. Yet, as I perused my surroundings, I couldn’t help but focus on a small drinking glass that sat before me. Did someone leave their gin behind? Sadly the focus wasn’t on the beautiful cymbidium that bloomed over the rim, but instead on the ugly glass.

Did Someone Leave Their Gin Behind?

On their website they describe the venue with such tantalising and beautiful phrases, “timeless elegance resides…” and “every experience will captivate your senses.”

Well, they’re right. The welcome experience did captivate my senses, but not in a positive way.

As I waited, I was disturbed to see a trolley, laden with plastic buckets being wheeled across the lobby by a rather scruffy florist. After 15 minutes of watching and listening to her talking loudly on her phone whilst snipping away at her flowers, I was relieved to see my friend arrive and escape to a quieter setting for our afternoon tea to relish the freshly baked sweet and savoury delicacies.

Plastic buckets have no place in the lobby of a 5-star hotel!
As a service provider to luxury brands, there are small details that make a difference in improving the customer experience of your clients' guests. For example, here are 6 tips for floral designers to ensure they deliver a 5-star experience:

Do ask your florist to use appropriate glassware and vases.

Whilst floral arranging can add a positive experience to your guests’ visits, a well-groomed florist is just as important as well-groomed staff.

Remind your florists that whilst in public spaces, they're also on public view and if they must take calls, to refrain from bellowing loudly on their phones.

When placing arrangements on coffee tables, make sure the flowers can be viewed from all sides.

Keep the flowers fresh and the water clean at all times.

Keep the mechanics hidden. Elastic bands and tape don't belong in 5-star arrangements.

These are the small but important details which ensure your brand goes beyond customer service and delivers a consistently excellent brand experience.

With flowery wishes

A silent competition is brewing within the lobbies and public spaces of hotels around the world. Eye-grabbing displays bursting with colour from the gorgeous floral masterpieces of the Four Seasons George V in Paris to the fabulous installations of Wynn’s atrium in the U.S.

As a floral designer, I live by the power of flowers and I’ve been watching the following trends closely. I’m now in the midst of sharing my insights in my brand new book ‘Hospitality, Flowers & Brands’ with practical solutions to get your brand ahead of the competition.

Here are three reasons why you should better your flower design to instantly boost your hospitality brand:

1.) Beautiful Flowers Enhance Customer Experience

We all know how a simple vase of fresh flowers can transform a room, with its subtle fragrance and vivid colours. So imagine what a beautifully designed floral centrepiece can do when positioned strategically in a hotel or resort lobby.

Beautiful flowers have become an integral part of the overall customer experience within the hospitality industry, where hotels, restaurants and brands compete at every level.

2.) Striking Floral Dislpays Create Photo Opportunities

Eye catching flowers can be a great boost for any hotel or restaurant in the age of the selfie. General Managers & Marketing Managers take note! These floral displays become an attraction for the guests; provide a very warm welcome and add that ‘WOW’ factor.

Think about it. Families and guests will often gather to have their pictures taken before heading to their favourite F&B outlets for lunches and dinners and guess where those photos end up?
Karen French is a sought-after talent in Floral Design. She’s created beautiful, extravagant pieces, but one of her favorite projects to date was for a private event at the Swiss Club in Singapore.

It was a surprising kind of love, as if the inspiration for floristry passed through Karen and into a pocket of her heart as she attended her first ever Christmas themed floral demonstration. She was hooked, and no one was more surprised than she! She pursued floral design as a kind of creative outlet afterwards, of which she had several, yet in the end beautiful blooms and fragrant flowers won her over.

The love built momentum over time as Karen decided to pursue professional training at a prominent floral design school. She then gracefully swept here and there around the globe attending courses, master classes, and floral experiences headed by award-winning, world-famous floral designers who were specialised experts. Since then, her love, passion, stewardship, and partnership with flowers has built a meaningful, reputable business for her creating beautiful spaces for the hospitality industry and in private homes.

Floral Design Consultation With The Swiss Club In Singapore

Word of mouth is a powerful source of business for women like Karen who strive for excellence. It was then proof of her hard work when an event manager recommended her for the event at the Swiss Club. The private affair would play host to private bank clients, high net-worth individuals and investors, so impressive design was an absolute must.

Before ever making any agreements on a potential floral project, Karen enjoys a consultation – giving her time to listen, to understand the client’s needs, to talk about time frames, the type of flowers they require, logistics and which flowers they particularly value. All of this helps Karen to better know whom she is working with, and to establish realistic expectations. Clients looking for a quick quote without a meeting are not clients Karen is interested in, so she loved that the Swiss Club was happy to meet with her and very open about their requirements, their venue, and timeline.

“You can be the most amazing and versatile designer in your niche but if you fail to establish a good relationship with your client then the project won’t have a good start. Mutual respect is key. We had a mutual respect. From the outset they valued my style and expertise, and I valued their professionalism.”

Floral Design Planning With The Swiss Club In Singapore

Established in 1871, the Swiss Club is one of the oldest and most historic clubs in Singapore. Taking into consideration the venue and its surrounding lush greenery, Karen decided on a Tropical theme utilizing exotic heliconias, cymbidium, zantedeschia, alstroemeria, and plenty of orchids with young coconut leaves and topical foliage.

Everyone involved agreed that the design and choice of flowers needed to be in harmony with the venue, wow their guests, and be robust enough not to wilt in the sweltering heat. Though exotic flowers might not strike locals or Singapore expats as anything special, they were very much an integral part of the experience for the Club’s visitors coming from abroad, and floral design stretched over two banqueting facilities and the adjoining staircase. Quite a feat for Karen and her team!

“Sometimes we start from a blank canvas. During the consultation phase we’ll have a walk through the event space. We look at the décor; the colours, the soft furnishings and art work. This time together is useful to both parties because we get a good visual of what we need to work around. Being on site we also have direct access to the staff we’ll be working with, can see how cooperative they’ll be and can ask department heads of any restrictions and what, if anything, is allowed to be moved.”

After the two parties agree on a theme, colour, time frame and flowers, Karen assembles her team to commence the working of magic!

Goals In Her Floral Design

“As a former image consultant, how it’s going to look is paramount. Thankfully I have a sixth sense and am blessed with a creative mind for visualizing the end result, so I find it easy to convey that vision to my clients through sketches, visuals and mood boards. Image is very important and my goal is to create a welcoming environment for their clients and guests. Understandably, I also want my flowers to look good in that particular setting.”

To Karen, flowers are more than simple blooms to enhance the atmosphere of a particular venue or room, they are emotion and art, that’s why in choosing each individual flower she never compromises on quality, and always makes sure her pick is fresh. Humbly, Karen admits that she relies on fine quality, fresh flowers and floral accessories from her trusted rapport of wholesalers, saying “they’re a big link in the success of any floral project from advising what’s realistically available and getting stock in on time.”

Most important for Karen is that the design makes the client happy as she incorporates proportion and visual balance; making flowers harmonise with their environment and color transitions pleasing to the eye. Every project Karen touches is a masterpiece no matter how simple or complex, and we’ve yet to witness a project that hasn’t moved its beholders to admiration!

Recent Floral Design Projects In Singapore

Karen has worked on many floral projects for corporate, private homes, and non-profit organisations. She is always inspired by bigger teams of designers coming together from around the world, like in 2010 when she was part of a world-record attempt to create the world’s largest bouquet! She’s also participated in floral exhibitions at five-star hotels, and iconic buildings such as the National Museum of Singapore.

Karen was also recently showcased in a floral fashion at the 2015 Dream Ball held at the Shangri-La! You can catch a glimpse of her design for the event in the video below at 0:34, 0:52, and 1:29!
