Committed to uplifting communities and providing livelihood opportunities, Aboitiz InfraCapital partnered with Connected Women, an innovative social enterprise advocating for upskilling women in technology, to empower 100 Filipino women through a specialized training program in Artificial Intelligence (AI) data annotation. This partnership was solidified in a signing of a Memorandum of Agreement on August 14, 2023 at the AIC office in BGC, Taguig.

Under this partnership, AIC will back Connected Women’s flagship initiative, Elevate AIDA, which provides women in vulnerable and displaced sectors of society with free online training on data annotation and digital skills to help them qualify for jobs in the booming global artificial intelligence industry. The program will initially focus on college undergraduates, unemployed graduates, and unemployed mothers from Davao as part of its pilot batch, then eventually expand to communities from identified areas in Luzon and Visayas.

“We believe that knowledge is the greatest tool of empowerment that’s why we welcome this opportunity to help Connected Women in supporting online skills development and eventually providing remote work opportunities for women,” AIC President and CEO Cosette Canilao said. “This is aligned with our company’s purpose of enabling business and uplifting communities, and in the process helping improve the lives of our fellowmen for the long haul,” she added.

The Elevate AIDA training program will include an online/classroom course and on-the-job training. It will cover a range of topics, including data labeling techniques, remote work best practices, basic professional communication, and basic computer skills, all of which are scalable in the digital remote workspace. Moreover, it will foster a supportive environment that encourages networking, collaboration, and mentorship, ensuring participants’ holistic growth.

“When we have the women as part of Elevate AIDA, they don’t always graduate as data annotators or technology workers. But they definitely graduate as different people,” Connected Women CEO Agnes Gervacio said. “They are more excited about what the future holds for them,” she added.

Connected Women, The Aboitiz Foundation, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on Tuesday, July 18, to support Connected Women’s program to upskill zero to low income women in artificial intelligence and data annotation. This program aims to train women in skills needed in the global artificial intelligence industry, which is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years. The signatories of the MOU were DILG Secretary Benjamin “Benhur” Abalos, Jr., Aboitiz Group President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Sabin M. Aboitiz, Aboitiz Foundation President and COO Maribeth L. Marasigan, and Connected Women Co-Founder Ruth Yu-Owen.

The ceremonial signing was witnessed by AEV Chief Reputation and Sustainability Officer Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar, DILG Undersecretary Margarita Gutierrez, Philippine Commission on Women Executive Director Atty. Kristine Yuzon-Chaves, Isabela City, Basilan Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, Toledo City, Cebu Mayor Marjorie Perales, and Connected Women CEO Agnes Gervacio.

Elevate AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Data Annotation) is a program created by Connected Women in 2020 with the support of UN Women. It aims to provide women with economic empowerment through comprehensive digital training, tools, and employment opportunities in the growing digital economy. The partnership with The Aboitiz Foundation and the DILG is a significant milestone in accelerating and scaling the program, as the DILG will support Elevate AIDA by identifying and endorsing Local Government Units (LGUs) that can implement the program as part of their Gender and Development (GAD) programs.

“Our world is rapidly evolving, with technology playing an increasingly crucial role. Artificial Intelligence and data annotation are no longer things of the future; they are here and now. Our primary goal has been to uplift and upskill Filipino women, especially in these high-demand tech fields. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to this cause,” said Aboitiz Group President and CEO Sabin M. Aboitiz in his opening remarks.

“The strength of our vision lies in partnership. Alone, we can only do so much, but together, the impact of our efforts multiplies. Our collaboration with Connected Women has already begun to create ripples of positive change. Today, as we formalize our partnership with the DILG, we add another potent force to our mission,” Aboitiz continued.

DILG Secretary Abalos followed with some words of support for the program, aligning it with the government’s goal of promoting inclusive growth, and endorsing its implementation to all local government units.

“I call on all the local government units, from the governors, the mayors, down to the barangay, to support the innovations of Connected Women, especially when it provides training for women. Moving forward, let us always remember that our communities’ strengths lie in our united efforts and shared responsibility. When we support this project, we do not only support women, but we are empowering our nation, our country,” Sec. Abalos declared.

Elevate AIDA prepares women for work in the field of artificial intelligence and data annotation, with graduates joining Connected Women’s workforce pool, creating job opportunities, and stimulating local economies.

“We are very grateful for this partnership with the Aboitiz Foundation and DILG to empower underskilled and disadvantaged Filipino women through digital training and job opportunities. Together, we will drive economic and social empowerment, making a life-changing impact on the women, their families, and communities,” said Connected Women Co-Founder Ruth Yu- Owen.

As the Aboitiz Group undergoes its Great Transformation to become the Philippines’ first Techglomerate, they are harnessing the power of technology and embracing a renewed entrepreneurial mindset to foster positive transformations in society. This includes their commitment to bolstering technology education and promoting entrepreneurial endeavors to advance businesses and communities across the Philippines.

“The partnership between Aboitiz Foundation and Connected Women, further strengthened by the support of DILG, is a game changer. By joining forces with government entities, we are expanding our reach and efforts. We are building bridges between the public and private sectors, creating synergies that will further amplify our collective mission of women empowerment.” said Aboitiz Foundation President and COO Maribeth L. Marasigan.

“Uplifting women is not just about changing lives; it’s about transforming societies. With this MOU, we’re not only shaping the future of work but also crafting a narrative of resilience, innovation, and shared prosperity. We are sowing the seeds of change one woman one skill one dream at a time,” said Aboitiz Chief Reputation and Sustainability Officer Ginggay Hontiveros-Malvar.

Toledo City Mayor Marjorie Perales and Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman shared their success stories of implementing Elevate AIDA in their respective communities.

The pilot program partnership of Connected Women’s Elevate AIDA with the Aboitiz Foundation was launched in March 2022 in Toledo City in collaboration with the local government unit (LGU) and Cebu-based AboitizPower subsidiary Therma Visayas Inc. Currently around 80 percent of the trainees have secured employment earning up to 600 pesos per day.

“To these Toledanas this will remain the most unprecedented point of transformation in their lives and for their families,” shared Mayor Perales.

Meanwhile in Isabela City Mayor Turabin-Hataman has partnered with Connected Women under the LGU’s GAD fund. She is currently sponsoring a fourth batch of Elevate AIDA trainees.

“We are investing in our women because when we invest in women we know that the entire family and the community benefit,” said Mayor Turabin-Hataman.

Through its Elevate AIDA program, Connected Women has trained 1000 women, including 300 in partnership with The Aboitiz Foundation. The program aims to uplift 300,000 underskilled and disadvantaged women through technology upskilling and income generation initiatives over the next three years.

Connected Women renews partnership with Infinit Care to provide comprehensive and customized mental health support to its community, ensuring women’s overall health and well-being.

Celebrating International Women’s Month this March, Connected Women, a Philippines based community of women empowered by technology, has renewed its partnership with Infinit Care to provide its members access to a tech-driven mental well-being platform. Infinit Care is a mental health technology company that collaborates with businesses and organizations to supply comprehensive mental health support for their employees and communities.

This initiative will continue to provide access to approximately 100,000 women across the Philippines. Members of the Connected Women community will benefit from self-care tools and resources, daily check-in tracking, round-the-clock chat support, and tailored mental health education and training sessions delivered through virtual webinars.

Women’s Mental Health

Gina Romero, Founder and Head of Special Projects, noted that their members continue to seek support daily while grappling with their professional and personal lives.

Romero also highlighted that women are more susceptible to mental health issues compared to men. According to a Rapid Gender Analysis by CARE International, which examined the pandemic’s impact across 38 countries, the number of women reporting mental health challenges was triple that of men, with over a quarter of women experiencing increased stress and anxiety.

Data from the Infinit Care platform supports this view, with women measuring significantly lower well-being scores in all employment sectors, whether they work from home or in the workplace.

Women helping one another

Infinit Care is delighted to continue providing comprehensive support to women through this partnership. “Supporting women’s mental health does not only significantly impact their overall well-being but also their ability to contribute to their communities and the economy,” said Infinit Care GM, Anne Ordona.

“Our continued partnership with Infinit Care means the women in our community will continue to have access to professional mental health first aid whenever they need someone to talk to. We couldn’t be happier with the progressive data driven approach and overall professionalism of the Infinit Care clinical team,” added Romero.

Infinit Care General Manager, Anne Ordona, shared how significant the program is to her, and how important it was that women support each other. “As a woman in business juggling many other roles and responsibilities such as daughter, sister, wife, mother, teacher, breadwinner,– I am intimately familiar with the mental load women carry on a daily basis,” she explained.  “The hope is that through this partnership, ConnectedWomen and Infinit Care can continue to bring real support to the Connected Women community and help women overcome challenges like stress, anxiety, and depression. It’s not about enabling women to do it all–it’s about leaning on each other and supporting one another so we can show up the best way we can.”

Connected Women in partnership with The Aboitiz Group and SM Supermalls’ SuperMoms Club announces its continued commitment to empowering women by providing technology upskilling and meaningful income generation opportunities.

Connected Women in partnership with The Aboitiz Group and SM Supermalls’ SuperMoms Club announces its continued commitment to empowering women by providing technology upskilling and meaningful income generation opportunities.

The partnership was announced during the International Women’s Day (IWD) Celebration on Wednesday, March 8, held by the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and United Nations (UN) Women. Anchored on the IWD theme “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for All,” the celebration was focused on advancing the visibility, participation, inclusion, and rights of women in the fields of digital, technology, and innovation.

The announcement was made by Connected Women Founder and Head of Special Projects Gina Romero, UN Women’s WeEmpowerAsia Philippines Country Program Manager Rosalyn Mesina, SM Supermalls President Steven Tan, and Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV) First Vice President and Chief Reputation and Sustainability Officer Ginggay Hontiveros, who was represented by Aboitiz Foundation, Inc. (AFI) Assistant Vice President Danny Cerence, AFI Manager Jowelle Ann Cruz together with AEV Assistant Vice President for Media Relations Maricar Bautista.

As technology continues to revolutionize how society lives, works, and connects, it is important for women to have the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to participate and thrive in today’s digital world.

In line with the IWD theme and a shared vision of championing women’s economic empowerment through technology, women beneficiaries will be trained in Artificial Intelligence and Data Annotation (AIDA) through Connected Women’s award-winning Elevate AIDA program. With their market-aligned skills, these women will have access to long-term, flexible work and livelihood opportunities.

“Through our partnership with Aboitiz and SM SuperMoms, our shared membership of 340,000 women will be empowered in the future of work. Together, we aim to create more opportunities for Filipino women in tech and provide remote work options for inclusive and diverse workplaces. This is a crucial step towards building a more innovative and sustainable workforce for the Philippines’ digital future,” said Connected Women Founder and Head of Special Projects Gina Romero.

Between the partners exists synergies based on the shared belief about the power of technology to bridge the gender gap and empower women.

“Empowering women through technology is not just about providing skills and income, it’s about advancing their vital and rightful position in the digital world. With AI and data annotation training, Filipino women will be empowered to navigate the changing nature of work and contribute to the growth of the economy. Let’s finally bridge the gender gap in tech and create more opportunities for women to thrive and succeed, not just for themselves, but for the entire nation,” said AEV First Vice President and Chief Reputation and Sustainability Officer Ginggay Hontiveros.

Filipino women have historically been disadvantaged in work and economic opportunities due to family commitments and a lack of flexible job opportunities. For Connected Women’s 100,000-strong community and their partners, technology and digital adoption for women is key to women’s empowerment, as well as national economic growth and recovery.

The SM SuperMoms Club is the Philippines’ largest mommy community on Facebook, with over 240,000 members. It is a digital safe space and moderated forum where Filipino mothers can share and support each other, with discussions over pregnancy, motherhood, and work-life balance, among others. Through this partnership, interested SM SuperMoms members can generate income and be financially independent through tech upskilling and remote work opportunities.

The Elevate AIDA training program was launched in 2020, in partnership with UN Women, providing tech upskilling opportunities to women during the height of the pandemic. It has been recognized by the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEP) Awards for championing opportunities for women.

As of December 2022, Connected Women has trained over 55,000 women with the support of like-minded partners, including Aboitiz Group business units namely Aboitiz Power Corporation (AboitizPower) and Union Bank of the Philippines (UnionBank). Also working with Aboitiz Data Innovation, Connected Women is empowering their members to take on advanced services such as data handling, language annotation, and image annotation for ADI’s Data Science and Artificial intelligence projects.

The recent partnership with Aboitiz Foundation continues the Group’s CSR legacy.

As the Aboitiz Group embarks on its Great Transformation to become the Philippines’ first Techglomerate, they are leveraging technology and a renewed entrepreneurial mindset to drive change for a better world. This includes supporting education and entrepreneurship initiatives that make meaningful impacts on the lives of all Filipinos.

Remote working is now a lucrative job that many people would like to explore. Thankfully, there are several opportunities out there now wherever you are in the world (that’s the beauty of remote work, after all). So if you’re thinking about making the move but are not sure where to begin, we’ve compiled some of the most in-demand skills for remote working this 2022.

5 In-Demand Skills for Remote Workers this 2022:

1. Data Annotation

Although Artificial Intelligence has yet to achieve human-level understanding, the AI space is seeing rapid advancement towards providing machines with knowledge using Machine Learning methods that still depend on human intervention to deliver high-quality annotations for training AI, which results in a huge demand for human annotators. Annotation jobs, many of which are remote with flexible hours, might just be the perfect job while majority of people are still recovering from the effects of a global pandemic.

2. Web development

A developer is a big term for someone who knows about the nitty gritty of tech-related stuff, and it branches out in many other different categories. These can mean software, app development, web design, and more. This isn’t necessarily the easiest skill to learn as it takes an understanding of certain languages and a lot of practice. But it’s not impossible either. There are hundreds and hundreds of resources out there and you can start looking for work even at an entry level. Learning how to be a developer can reap good rewards — as it is high paying and definitely in demand in the time of the Internet.

3. Virtual Assistance

If you’re an organized person, why not try being a virtual assistant? This includes helping business owners manage their day to day tasks such as responding to emails, scheduling appointments, responding to customer inquiries, and more. The best thing about this is you can do all these from wherever you are! It’s a highly satisfying job that requires good managing skills and organization. All you need is a good internet connection!

4. Online marketing

Online marketing is popular because it can be fun and it is definitely one of the most sought-after. This includes being able to capture niche audiences through strategizing using its many different branches. This includes buzz words such as SEO, traffic generation, analytics, just to name a few. The great thing about online marketing is that you can be creative while also being analytical.

Finding resources to learn about online marketing isn’t difficult at all, either. There are several ways to get you started and it definitely helps that you are online a lot or know the latest about the Internet.

5. Design

Design is another exciting thing you can explore as a remote worker. If you’ve got an interest in good design, or if you think you’re good at presenting information in effective ways, then this might just be for you. This can include graphic design, animation, web design, logo making, UI and so much more! A lot of designers find their way in the industry through freelance jobs. The more you build your portfolio, the better chances of companies hiring you full-time as a designer.

If you’re afraid that you don’t particularly have any of these skills yet, there’s no need to feel intimidated. A lot of these skills can be learned online. There are short courses found everywhere, some of them you don’t even have to pay! Just invest some time in developing them and you’ll be good to go in that big universe of remote work. In fact, why not join our Connected Women community where you can connect to other online professionals and.. through our amazing partners, we also offer digital skills training for free. See you!

BRIDGE Program x Connected Women [Press release]

Manila, the Philippines — A joint pilot project between the Bridging Recruitment to Reintegration in Migration Governance (BRIDGE) Program and Connected Women promises to help women Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) returning to the Philippines, including those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, get a foot in the door of the digital economy.

Reintegrating Women through IT Reskilling and Education (REWIRED) builds on Connected Women’s flagship program Elevate AIDA (Artificial Intelligence Data Annotation), and will train 50 OFW returnees and would-be returnees in artificial intelligence (AI) data labeling to equip them with skills for remote work. The pilot project will run from March to August 2022. The program includes 2 webinars and a 3-week training program. The introductory webinar scheduled on 23 March 2022 will tackle the opportunities for OFWs in the digital economy and how you can upskill and re-skill for freelancing, remote work, and microwork.  The second webinar will discuss industry-specific tools that are used for data labeling.

A survey commissioned by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in 2020 among OFWs returning amid COVID-19 found that female OFWs were “less likely to receive overall repatriation support” than their male counterparts. In fact, a United Nations policy brief indicated that the pandemic’s “compounded economic impacts are felt especially by women and girls who are generally earning less, saving less, and holding insecure jobs or living close to poverty.”

Promoting the dignified return, and sustainable and gender-responsive reintegration of migrant workers is one of the objectives of the BRIDGE Program funded by the Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) and jointly implemented by IOM, the International Labor Organization, and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). This is in line with Objective 21 of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM), of which the Philippines is a champion country.

“We chose a pilot project related to Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) because women tend to be underrepresented in these sectors,” said Catherine Torres, UN Women’s BRIDGE program officer. “So we are hitting two birds with one stone: helping women acquire portable skills they can use whether they choose to remigrate or stay home for good, and helping to carve a bigger space for women in the male-dominated digital sector.”

Lucinda Pike, Executive Director of Enrich HK said “We are delighted to partner with Connected Women and BRIDGE through the Elevate AIDA programme to equip migrant domestic workers with skills and alternative pathways to income, ensuring successful return and reintegration in the Philippines.”

Connected Women’s CEO and Co-Founder, Gina Romero, welcomed the opportunity to work with BRIDGE on the pilot project. “As a daughter of a former Filipino Overseas Worker, this initiative is very close to my heart. We are grateful for this collaboration to ensure no woman is left behind in the future of work.”

In this networked society, it is extremely important for everyone to be technically skilled to cater to the growing demands in the tech field and accelerate careers in the tech domain.

Since 2016, Ciena Corporation’s Women@Ciena group aims to break down barriers that exist for women and encourage them to lift their voices in their workforce and communities. The group participates in initiatives such as mentoring, coaching, and development discussions.

Women@Ciena Asia Pacific and Japan has been continuously endeavoring to empower underprivileged women by supporting them to learn new skills and build a career in the tech space.
In continuation to our efforts, Women@Ciena APJ launched a laptop donation program in association with Connected Women to donate decommissioned laptops to a charity based in Singapore called Aidha.

A micro-business school dedicated to ending the cycle of poverty, Aidha provides financial literacy and entrepreneurship education for foreign domestic workers in Singapore.

Aidha, which is Sanskrit for ‘that to which we aspire’, runs various programs allowing low income women to take steps to achieve a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Connected Women Founder Gina Romero nominated Aidha for the donation program based on their aligned mission to create opportunities for underprivileged women.

Based in the Philippines, Connected Women is a multi-awarded social impact startup that helps Filipino women reach their goals by providing training for entrepreneurship, freelancing, and remote work.

Now with over 75,000 members in its community, Connected Women is focusing on providing socially responsible AI & digital task outsourcing, ultimately creating livelihood opportunities for women in both urban and rural areas.

“Aidha has been a huge inspiration for the work we are doing here in the Philippines. As a daughter of a Filipino Domestic Worker, their mission is very close to my heart”, says Romero.
Recognising the problem that most domestic helpers are trapped in a vicious cycle of ending up penniless after working so hard, Aidha aims to equip them with skills to build a more sustainable future for themselves and their families.

Regional Managing Director, Services Sales at Ciena, Gordana Koops said “Ciena is proud to support this fantastic initiative to foster digital inclusion and connect women across the region”.
Let’s help more women reach their goals by enabling their access to connectivity, technology, training, and income generation opportunities.

By educating one woman, we can help impact nine lives. Since we were formed in 2006, more than 5,000 domestic workers have benefited from our programmes, impacting over 36,000 people in some of the poorest communities in Asia.
